International Data Corporation has declared the results for Worldwide shipments of tablets in fourth quarter of 2017. As usual, Apple ended up again at first rank in tablet market. While the interesting thing to know is that Samsung’s second place has been taken over by Amazon in this quarter. Now Amazon stands as runner-up after Apple’s dominance at first place.
According to IDC Apple delivered 13.2 million slates with a minor increase of 0.6% as compared to same time period of previous year. The Apple’s global tablet market share remained 26.6% during last quarter. The mainstream of success was the cheap iPad and new versions of iPad Pro.
Samsung usually stands in second place after Apple but during the fourth quarter of 2017 Amazon has taken control of the runner up position. The price cutting by Amazon during holiday season has helped to surge its rank. While another factor need to consider that newer fire tablet models now have Alexa virtual assistant. According to the report 7.7 million fire tablets shipped during quarter, a big increase of 50.3% as compared to fourth quarter of 2016. It helped the company to gain its tablet market share from 9.6% to 15.6%.
While Samsung had slow growth in all tablet lineups except its detachable tablets. The company shipped 7 million tablets in fourth quarter. Samsung tablet market share remained 14.1% with year-over-year decline of 13%. Huawei stood at fourth place with 3.5 million units shipped, grabbing the 7.1% share in the tablet market. Lenovo with 3.1 million units shipped and 6.2% market share stood at 5th position.
Overall global tablet shipment dumped 7.9% with 49.6 million units as compared to 53.8 million shipped at the same time period the year before.
